Literacy circles is a strategy that assigns different roles to students. You read the article, chapter, website, whatever.. through the lens of that role.
One role is the "connector" - As you read, you try to think of connections to the real world - examples of where this appears in everyday life.

Another role is the "illuminator" - your role is to look for "a-ha's" when they read. Look for things you didn't know or that gave you new insight.

Another is the questioner - that person has to think of questions as they read that are important to understanding the reading. Develop three levels of questions -

I – What is.. (information)
II – With what would you compare… (process to get some understanding)
III – Why is this (good/bad…)… (use it in content)

The Illustrator - draws a concept map or other visual to represent the key ideas

Vocab person - works on the important definitions

Then finally you come together to discuss on the wiki the reading from each point of view - at the end, you all have a richer understanding because of thinking about it from different perspectives.

Rubric for discussion: Contains at least 5 elements from your article in the "view" you are reading. (10 pts) Shows a deep understanding of the article. (10 pts). Read and leave an intelligent, useful, concise comment on all other classmates discussions. (20 pts)
